Iowa Trip: Day 1

22 Sep

Rode the Bayertown Loop with my dad this morning, which is about 13 miles. After we made it back to the starting corner, I took off by myself for a second loop. Rode it in a little over 41 minutes, for a nice 18.5 mph avg! The wind really picked up from the west, and of course, the ride seemed to be headed west about 2/3rds of the time. The bad part about wind is that you almost always spend more time riding into it. The resistance really put a damper on my speed; I could’ve used a nice paceline today! That’s how cycling goes: no matter where you start or finish, the road spends more time going uphill into the wind than not!
The temp was in the low 50’s, so felt a lot more like fall here. The leaves haven’t really started changing yet, so the ride did not have a total fall feel to it. However, the great Iowa country roads provided a nice, smooth surface to cruise on, so no complaints here. Looking forward to some longer rides over the next few days, time permitting.

Some days that wind seems to be coming at you no matter which direction you turn. The last race I was in I knew it was going to be tough when I came down off a bridge with a top speed of only 20 because the wind was trying real hard to blow me back up the bridge. Happy riding.
